Diving Bell

A man enters a ring fighting
a shadow of a younger man’s body.

Two dogs were barking all night
in that cemetery of a child.

A drifter sings beneath a street lamp
strumming his guitar with no strings.

Always behind him, a woman in a white dress
breaks a mirror, entering Heaven in five pieces.

Father and mother run after their child on thin ice
until all of their footprints disappear.

Street mimes, battered by those invisible bells, collapse
empty handed, unable to show their faces.

The neighborhood turned off the lights all at once
and let their skeletons move out.

One by one, they haunted the black alleys of schoolyards.
Even the cops were called out, finding only wire hangers
and a red horse of someone’s childhood.
